This isn't your standard gallery with paintings on walls - it's a working space where you can watch ceramicists at their wheels, see demonstrations of techniques that have barely changed in centuries, and understand why this corner of the Midlands became the world's pottery capital.

You'll spend a good hour or two here, longer if you're genuinely interested in the craft. The demonstrations are the real draw - watching someone throw a pot from raw clay is hypnotic, properly absorbing. The gallery itself shows contemporary work alongside historical pieces, which gives proper context to what you're seeing.

It works best for adults and older teenagers who have patience for observation. Young kids might get restless unless there's a hands-on workshop on the day you visit. If you're staying at Luzlow Caravan Site or the excellent Glamping at Holly Grove Farm - both within five miles - it's absolutely worth the short drive. Even Castle Camping ltd, the furthest option at five miles, is barely ten minutes away.

Stoke itself is compact enough that you can combine Clay College with a walk round the town's industrial heritage, or pop into one of the remaining pottery factories that still do tours. The admission policy and opening hours shift, so check before you go, but it's rarely expensive and often free during certain hours. Real value if you're potter-curious, less essential if you're just passing through.
