Claverton Pumping Station

The Thames water wheel at Claverton has been hauling river water uphill since 1813, and standing beside it you understand why the Georgians were so pleased with themselves. This Victorian-era pumping station sits right on the Avon just outside Bradford-on-Avon, and it's genuinely odd in the best way - a proper feat of engineering that actually still works, powered entirely by the river's own current.

You can walk around the exterior most days, and the building itself is worth a look even from the towpath. The mechanics are visible if you peer through the windows - all that cast iron and wooden gearing that somehow kept Bath's fountains running without a single diesel engine. Inside visits happen occasionally, and when they do you get to see the whole system properly. Local volunteers keep it ticking, which gives the place a grassroots feel rather than a polished heritage site vibe.

It's not a major attraction - you won't spend three hours here unless you're genuinely into mechanical history. But as a detour on a walk along the Avon Valley between Bradford-on-Avon and Bath, it's brilliant. The setting alone is lovely, and kids tend to find the wheels and gears more interesting than you'd expect. The nearby Marsh Farm Caravan Site and Yellowtail Camping are both within easy reach if you're basing yourself in the area, making this an easy half-hour stop during a longer exploration of the valley.
