Clava Cairns

Just outside Inverness, these Bronze Age cairns sit in a field like something from another world entirely. Three of them, arranged in a line - two passage graves with standing stones circling them, and a central ring cairn in between. The stonework is genuinely striking, especially when the light hits it properly.

You're looking at around 3,500 years of history here, which does put things in perspective. The passages inside the larger cairns are aligned to the winter solstice sunset, which the builders clearly thought was rather important. Walking around them takes maybe twenty minutes, forty-five if you're the contemplative type or have kids asking questions about everything.

It's free and accessible year-round, though honestly it's best visited when the weather's decent - there's not much shelter and the Highland wind cuts through. Winter solstice brings the odd enthusiast hoping to catch the sunset alignment, which is fair enough.
