Clatworthy Wood

Walking into Clatworthy Wood from the Taunton side feels like stepping properly away from it all - the kind of place where your phone signal drops and the only sound is whatever's rustling in the canopy. It's a genuine working forest rather than a manicured country estate walk, which means muddy paths, real trees, and none of that sanitised visitor centre nonsense.

The woodland itself is dense and atmospheric, with a decent mix of conifers and broadleaves. There's a reservoir too - Clatworthy Reservoir - which adds some open water scenery to break up the treeline. Most people are here for the walks rather than to gaze at wildlife, and fair enough - the paths are straightforward enough that you won't get lost, but interesting enough that you won't feel like you're trudging round a municipal park.

It works brilliantly as a morning or afternoon detour if you're based at Middle Stone Farm Glamping or Waterrow Touring Park nearby. Two to three hours is about right unless you're the type who photographs every fungus. Dog walkers love it. Families with restless children might find the lack of obvious attractions a bit thin, though there's nothing inherently boring about trees if you're willing to look around properly.

Access appears to be free and open to the public, though it's worth checking locally in Taunton before you head out. No visitor facilities that I'm aware of, so bring water and don't expect a café.
