Clashbennie Standing Stone

Standing alone in a Fife field, this Bronze Age stone is exactly the sort of thing you stumble upon by accident and end up thinking about for weeks afterwards. The monolith rises about four metres from the ground, weathered but unmissable once you know where to look. It's near Perth, close enough for an afternoon detour if you're based at one of the local caravan parks like Snugs at Logie Farm.

There's not much ceremony to visiting - you simply find it and stand there. No visitor centre, no entrance fee, no crowds. That's rather the appeal. Bronze Age sites like this one are genuinely rare on this part of the Tayside coast, and it's worth the diversion if you're into archaeology or just fancy a bit of local history that doesn't involve queuing. Kids can touch the stone without anyone minding, which beats most museum experiences.

Allow thirty minutes or so, less if you're just after a quick photograph. The real value here is in the walk to reach it and the quiet satisfaction of standing where people did five thousand years ago. It won't dominate your holiday, but paired with other attractions in the Perth area, it makes a decent morning outing. Best in dry weather when the surrounding ground isn't waterlogged - the approach path can get boggy depending on recent rainfall.
