Clare Castle

The mound rises abruptly from the Suffolk countryside just east of Sudbury, grass-covered and steep. Clare Castle is what remains of a Norman stronghold from 1090 - no dramatic stonework here, just earthworks and that commanding raised platform where the keep once stood. You can walk right to the top in under five minutes, which sounds slight but the views across the Stour Valley actually reward the effort. On a clear day you're looking toward Essex, and the whole thing gives you a genuine sense of medieval strategic thinking.

This is genuinely useful if you've got restless children or you're doing a walking loop through Clare itself, which is a proper market town with a decent high street and some good pubs. Allow twenty minutes maximum for the castle exploration unless you're the type to sit and sketch. The site is free and accessible year-round - no gates, no faffing about.

Where it works best is as part of a broader Suffolk ramble. If you're staying at Cranfield Retreat or Lake View Lodges nearby, it's worth combining with a walk down to the river and through Clare's medieval street layout. The castle won't hold your attention for long on its own, but it's the kind of place that makes a nice punctuation mark in a day of proper countryside exploration. Early morning avoids any summer crowd, though calling it "crowded" would be generous.
