Cladach an Uillt Ghrìsean

The beach at Cladach an Uillt Ghrìsean isn't one you'll stumble upon by accident - you have to actually want to find it. That's part of its appeal. Tucked away near Gairloch in the Northwest Highlands, this is a proper wild stretch of Scottish coast: golden sand, dramatic cliffs rising behind, and the kind of Atlantic light that makes you squint into the distance without knowing quite what you're looking for.

What you get is authenticity over amenities. There's no café, no car park with painted lines, no lifeguards. Just you, the beach, and occasionally other people who bothered to seek it out. It's excellent for walkers who want something beyond the main Gairloch beach, and families with older kids who won't complain about a bit of scrambling to get there. Photographers will find the cliff backdrop and wave action genuinely worth the effort.

The walk itself is straightforward but requires decent boots - muddy in places, rocky underfoot. Give yourself a good two hours if you're making an afternoon of it. Tide times matter here, so check before you go. The sea's cold year-round, but summer months bring calmer conditions and slightly less vicious wind.
