Clach-mheall Dubh

Getting to the summit of Clach-mheall Dubh means a proper hill walk from Newtonmore, but the effort pays off with views across the Monadhliath mountains that make the climb feel worth every step. It's not technically demanding - more a solid uphill trudge than a scramble - but you'll need decent fitness and proper footwear.

The walk takes around three to four hours return depending on your pace and where you start. What makes it appealing is the relative quiet. You won't find hordes here like on some of the more famous peaks. The landscape opens up gradually as you gain height, moving from moorland into something more exposed and grand. On a clear day the views extend far across the Highlands.

This works well for experienced walkers and anyone who wants a genuine hill day without the crowds. It's not suitable for young children or anyone new to mountain walking - the terrain can be boggy and the weather turns quickly up here. Allow a full morning or afternoon, bring a map, and check conditions before you go.

Staying at Invernahavon Caravan Park just down the road gives you an ideal base. It's only 3.7 miles away and highly rated, so you can combine this hill with other walks in the area.
