Cissywell Wood

Walk into Cissywell Wood near Cockermouth and you're immediately swallowed by thick deciduous forest - the kind of place where you genuinely lose phone signal and time moves differently. It's a proper woodland experience without being grand or over-managed, which is exactly what makes it work.

The main trail takes you through beech and oak, past a modest stream that's more charming than spectacular, and if you're lucky you'll spot roe deer or hear woodpeckers. There's a decent network of paths threading through, so you can either do a quick half-hour loop or spend two hours properly exploring. The ground gets boggy after rain - I'd recommend proper boots rather than trainers.

This is ideal for families who actually want their kids to walk rather than whine, or for walkers wanting a gentle morning circuit without needing to drive far from Cockermouth. There's something honest about it - no visitor centre, no café, just woodland as it should be. You won't find it crammed with tourists or lined with picnic benches.

If you're staying at North Lakes Country Park just down the road, Cissywell makes an excellent off-site woodland walk to break up a park-focused holiday. Allow a couple of hours including a slower pace. Go in autumn for the colour, but honestly any season works. Free to access and genuinely worth the detour if you're in the area.
