Clints Crags (Wainwright)

The walk up Clints Crags isn't long, but it's steep enough to earn your lunch at the top. This Wainwright sits above Cockermouth, offering proper fell-walking without the commitment of the bigger peaks - you're looking at a couple of hours there and back if you're reasonably fit. The summit itself gives you a cracking vantage point across the northern Lake District fells, with Skiddaw dominating the skyline to the south. It's the kind of place where you can see why people bother with Lakeland walking at all.

Who should go? Families with older kids will manage it fine, though toddlers will struggle with the scramble near the top. Walkers wanting a proper hill without the tourist crowds of Catbells or Helvellyn will appreciate it. History buffs won't find much up there except views - this is about the walk itself, not the destination.

Free to access, naturally. The nearest car park is a short drive from Cockermouth town centre. Go early or mid-week if you want solitude; weekends can see a few others tramping about. If you're staying at Forest Views or Skiddaw View - both just outside town - you can knock this out before breakfast without much fuss. It pairs well with a morning in Cockermouth itself, wandering the high street or poking around Wordsworth's house, then heading back to your caravan for tea. The ground can be boggy lower down after heavy rain, so check conditions beforehand.
