Cirencester Baptist Church

Walk down Dollar Street in Cirencester and you'll spot the red-brick Baptist chapel tucked among the Georgian terraces - it's the sort of building you might pass without thinking twice, but stop and look up. The church dates back to 1819, when Nonconformist worship was still regarded with some suspicion by the established church. Inside, the interior is properly humble: whitewashed walls, wooden pews, a modest gallery running along three sides. There's real character in that simplicity.

It's not a destination attraction in itself - you won't spend hours here - but if you're wandering Cirencester's town centre, which you absolutely should, the church deserves a quick look. The craftsmanship of the original joinery is worth noting, and there's something rather moving about 200-plus years of worship in one room. History types and anyone interested in English religious architecture will find it rewarding. Families passing through town might appreciate the peaceful interior as a break from shopping.

Admission appears free, though opening hours aren't widely publicised - check locally or try the door. Allow ten minutes maximum unless you're genuinely keen on chapel history.
