Churnet Valley Railway (Kingsley and Froghall Station)

A steam locomotive whistle cuts through the Staffordshire countryside - that's your cue that the Churnet Valley Railway is still very much alive. Based at Kingsley and Froghall Station, just a short drive from Stoke-on-Trent, this volunteer-run heritage railway operates vintage trains along a scenic stretch of valley that few tourists bother to find.

You'll board proper old rolling stock and rattle through woodland and moorland on journeys that typically last an hour or so. The railway has genuinely restored sections of a Victorian line, and staff know their stuff - they're enthusiasts, not tour guides reading scripts. The station itself is period-appropriate without being precious about it; there's a small café and enough platform activity to keep you occupied while waiting.

This works brilliantly for families with kids old enough to sit still, and for anyone with a soft spot for railways. It's not a theme park - expect a real journey rather than theatrical heritage, which honestly makes it better. The surrounding Churnet Valley is proper walking country too, so you could combine a train ride with exploring on foot.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Intake Farm and Hales Hall are closest - the railway makes a solid half-day activity. Check opening times before you go; these railways are volunteer-dependent and seasonal running is the norm. Entry costs a reasonable £10-15, though it varies with the route. Worth the detour if you've got transport and time to kill near Stoke.
