Church Wood

The paths aren't signposted particularly well, which actually adds to the adventure - though families with very young children might find the uneven terrain a bit challenging.

Dog walkers absolutely love this place. The woodland floor crunches satisfyingly underfoot with fallen leaves and twigs, and there's enough space for energetic pups to have a proper explore without disturbing other visitors. Bird watchers do well here too - the thick cover attracts plenty of species you won't spot in more open countryside.

Allow at least an hour if you're planning a decent walk, though you could easily spend a morning here if the weather's cooperating. The lack of facilities means bringing your own refreshments, but that's hardly a hardship when you're this close to Preston for supplies. It's free to wander, naturally, and works well as a leg-stretcher if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks like Claylands or Gibsons Barn. Not groundbreaking, but a solid choice for anyone craving proper woodland walking without the crowds.
