Church of St Oliver Plunkett

The Church of St Oliver Plunkett sits on the main street in Newry with the kind of understated grandeur you find in a lot of Irish churches - all red brick and purpose, no unnecessary fuss. It's a Catholic church, built to honour the saint of the same name who was executed in 1681, and the interior has that particular quality of light and silence that makes you want to speak quietly without anyone asking you to.

Unless you're genuinely interested in religious architecture or Irish Catholic history, you won't need more than twenty minutes here. Walk in, look at the altar, read a bit about Plunkett's story, walk out. But that's not a criticism - sometimes a place doesn't need to be a full afternoon's entertainment to be worth visiting.

It works best alongside a broader Newry visit rather than as a standalone trip. The town itself has enough going on - shops, restaurants, the canal - that you could easily slot this in during a morning or afternoon wandering about. If you're staying at Hilltop Hideaway, just 3.2 miles out of town, it's a straightforward drive or walk down into Newry centre.

Admission is free, as you'd expect. Realistically, pair it with a proper explore of Newry itself - grab coffee somewhere, have a look around the town - and you've got a decent few hours. Not spectacular, but solid.
