Church of St Morwenna and St John the Baptist

The Church of St Morwenna and St John the Baptist sits in Morwenstow, a couple of miles south of Bude, and it's one of those places that rewards the detour if you're staying in the area. The building itself is medieval - proper ancient, with a tower that's visible from the coastal path - and the interior has that worn, lived-in quality you only get from centuries of Sunday services and christenings. What makes it worth stopping for is the setting. The churchyard overlooks the cliffs, and on a clear day you can see right across the coast. It's the sort of spot where you understand why people bothered building it here in the first place.

The church is most interesting if you're keen on church architecture or local history. Families won't find much to occupy children for long - maybe twenty minutes if they're keen on climbing the tower, assuming it's open to visitors. Walkers will appreciate it as a solid stopping point on the coastal path between Bude and Crooklets Beach.

Admission is typically free, though donations are welcome. There's no charge for wandering the churchyard, which is honestly the better part anyway. Allow about thirty to forty minutes if you're having a proper look round.

If you're based at Atlantic Horizons or Wooda Farm Holiday Park - both excellent spots a few miles north - this works well as a morning walk rather than a destination in itself. Pair it with the coastal path and you've got a proper half-day sorted.
