Church of St James

Boston's St James Church rises above the flat Lincolnshire landscape like something from a medieval fever dream. The tower - that's the bit that catches your eye first - is a proper show-off, all pinnacles and stonework, and on a clear day you can spot it from miles across the fens.

Once you're inside, the scale hits you. High ceilings, intricate roof bosses if you know where to look, and enough carved stone to keep a historian happy for hours. The church has that slightly austere elegance typical of Perpendicular Gothic - less flowery than some, more purposeful. It's the kind of place where your footsteps echo and you find yourself speaking in whispers without meaning to.

Not one for the restless, this. Families with younger kids might find twenty minutes does the job; adults with a genuine interest in medieval architecture could easily spend double that. There's no charge to get in, which is a relief.

If you're staying at Long Acres Touring Park just down the road, St James makes a sensible half-hour detour on the way into Boston proper. The town itself is worth a poke around - decent high street, proper old port feel - and the church anchors the whole thing. Worth the walk if you're passing through, but don't expect it to be the highlight of your trip. It's solid, historical, and undeniably impressive in its way. Just don't expect any frills.
