Church of St Basil the Great

The Church of St Basil the Great sits just outside Billericay, a solid brick Victorian structure that catches you off guard if you're expecting yet another medieval parish church. Built in the 1870s, it's a proper working church with real character - the sort of place where you feel genuinely welcome to wander in and sit for a bit, rather than being herded through as a tourist.

What makes it worth a visit is the interior. The architecture has that distinctive Victorian confidence - good light, proper proportions, and none of the cramped darkness you get in some older churches. If you're into that period of church design, it's genuinely interesting. For families, it's a quick stop rather than an afternoon activity, but kids won't get restless. Fifteen minutes maximum, unless you're really keen on the detail work.

The real advantage is location. You're basically on the edge of Billericay, so it slots neatly into a broader day if you're staying at Barleylands Campsite or Essex Glamping - both are only a short drive away. Combine it with a walk into town or a visit to nearby green spaces, and you've got something worthwhile. On its own, though, it's a pleasant diversion rather than a destination. Worth ten minutes if you pass by, but don't go out of your way specially.
