Church of All Saints, Aston cum Aughton

The Church of All Saints sits quietly in Aston cum Aughton, just outside Sheffield, and it's genuinely worth a stop if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks. The church itself is a proper medieval structure with real character - all stone work and history, the kind of place where you can actually feel the age of things rather than read about it on a plaque.

Inside, there's decent Norman architecture if you're into that sort of thing, and the sort of peaceful atmosphere that makes you want to whisper even if no one else is around. Walkers and history types will get the most from it, particularly if you're combining it with a loop around Rother Valley Country Park just two miles away. The countryside out here is rolling and green, which makes the church feel even more part of the landscape.

If you're based at Waleswood Caravan & Camping Park for a week, this is a solid half-hour detour - enough time to have a proper look around without eating into your day. Free to enter as far as I could tell, and there's usually someone about to chat to if the door's unlocked. The real appeal is that it's not overrun with visitors, so you get some actual quiet time. Don't expect a visitor centre or tea shop, though. Come early afternoon when the light's decent for photographs, and bring a torch if you're visiting in winter - the interior can be darker than you'd expect.
