Church Minshull Aqueduct Marina

The canal basin at Church Minshull pulls you straight into a different world - suddenly you're surrounded by narrowboats in various states of customisation, the smell of diesel and fresh water, and the gentle sound of people tinkering with their floating homes. It's a working marina on the Shropshire Union Canal, about three miles south of Crewe, and it's genuinely worth a wander if you're staying at any of the nearby holiday parks.

What makes it more than just a place to look at boats is the aqueduct itself - you can walk across it and see the engineering that's held water this high for nearly two centuries. The towpath is proper pleasant for a stroll, especially if you've got restless kids who need to burn off energy between park activities. Most people allow an hour here, though you could easily spend longer if you fancy grabbing a coffee and watching the narrowboat traffic.

It's free to visit and wander about, though obviously any facilities or café services might charge. Winter can feel a bit quiet and windswept, so spring through autumn is the better bet.
