Church at St John's

The Church of St John the Baptist stands just outside Crawley, a solid medieval structure that rewards a quiet afternoon walk if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks. It's the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think - a genuine rarity these days.

Inside, the church has a proper Norman chancel and some decent Victorian restoration work that doesn't feel heavy-handed. The real appeal here is the peace of it. No queues, no gift shop, no school groups on a Tuesday afternoon. You get the space to look at the stonework, read the plaques, sit in a pew if you fancy it. If you're into medieval churches at all, there's enough here to occupy you for 20 minutes or so, longer if you're the type to photograph every arch and window.

It's free to visit, naturally, and open during daylight hours. Come on a weekday morning if you can - the light through the windows is better, and the place feels even more removed from the M25 madness just over the way.

The location makes sense if you're based at Worth Forest Glamping or Sunset Tree Camping for a longer break. It's the sort of low-key cultural break you slot in between proper park activities - a 15-minute walk from the car park, nothing strenuous. Families with children might find it brief, but for adults seeking some actual quiet in the Sussex countryside, it's well worth the detour from Crawley.
