Chudleigh Parish Church (St Martin & St Mary)

The church sits on a hill overlooking Chudleigh village, and from the churchyard you can see right across Devon's softer countryside. St Martin and St Mary is a proper medieval building - all stone and solidity - with a tower that's been watching over this corner of Devon since the 15th century at least.

Inside, it's the sort of place where you can actually feel the weight of time. The pews are worn smooth from centuries of use, and there are monuments and plaques that read like a local history book. The stone work is honest, not flashy - this was built for a working parish, not to show off.

It's a quiet stop, the kind of thing that appeals to walkers doing the circuit around Chudleigh or history types who like to root around parish churches. You won't spend hours here - thirty minutes is realistic unless you're doing a proper study of the memorials. There's a graveyard too, which has that peaceful churchyard feel.

The village itself sits between Newton Abbot and Exeter, making it an easy diversion if you're staying at Oakmoor Touring Park nearby. That adult-only site is well-rated, and the church gives you a legitimate reason to stretch your legs beyond the caravan. It's free to visit, though you might find yourself making a donation box contribution if you're the type. Best visited midweek when it's properly quiet.
