Chronicle Hills

Chronicle Hills sits just outside Cambridge, a modest chalk outcrop that rewards a bit of exploring if you're staying at one of the nearby campsites. It's the sort of place locals know about but most visitors miss - a handful of grassy slopes with views back towards the city and across the fens.

The walk itself is straightforward. You're looking at maybe an hour if you potter about, less if you just want the summit views. The terrain's easy enough for families, though it can get muddy after rain. Bring proper shoes.

Who gets the most from it? Walkers doing the wider Cambridgeshire routes, really. If you've got kids itching to climb something proper while camped at Shepreth Mill or Pightle Farm, this scratches that itch without demanding a full day out. History types might appreciate that you're standing on genuinely old geology - the chalk itself is Cretaceous, though the 'chronicle' in the name is a bit of a mystery. It's not some elaborate heritage site with interpretation boards.

Timing-wise, go early if you can. The slopes get windier as the day wears on, and the morning light's sharper. There's no cafe at the summit - not even close - so bring your own supplies.

Worth the detour from Cambridge? If you're already camping locally, absolutely. It breaks up a holiday nicely and the views justify the short drive. Don't expect drama though. It's honest, understated - the Cambridgeshire way.
