Christ Church Deeside

The River Dee's western bank holds a proper Victorian church that most people heading to Chester completely miss. Christ Church Deeside is a solid sandstone building dating from the 1880s, built when this stretch of North Wales was still developing as a commuter belt for the Cheshire border towns. The interior's what catches you - decent stained glass, original fixtures, and that particular smell of old wood and stone polish that you either love or find a bit oppressive.

It's genuinely worth a stop if you're into Victorian ecclesiastical architecture or just fancying a quiet fifteen minutes off the main roads. The churchyard's pleasant enough for a wander, and there's something about churches in this region that feels removed from the usual tourist trail without being deliberately obscure. You won't spend hours here - more like thirty to forty minutes if you're thorough - but it breaks up a drive nicely.

If you're based at any of the nearby parks - Oakwood Farm is closest at just over four miles, or Willow Farm if you prefer glamping - this makes for a gentle afternoon excursion. The Chester direction is useful too if you're planning a bigger day out. Admission details aren't widely advertised, so ring ahead or expect it might be locked outside service times. The location means it pairs well with riverside walks along the Dee itself rather than as a destination in its own right.
