Christ Church Chelmsford

The cathedral dominates Chelmsford's skyline like it's been there forever - though Christ Church only became a cathedral in 1914, elevated from parish church status. Inside, you're struck by the sheer height of the nave and the soaring Victorian architecture that feels properly grand without being cold. The stained glass catches light beautifully in the afternoon, and the whole space has that particular quiet that makes you lower your voice without being asked.

It's worth an hour if you're into church architecture or need some stillness in your day. Families with young kids might find it a bit long unless they're genuinely interested - there's not much interactive stuff, just the space itself to absorb. History buffs will appreciate the mix of Victorian engineering and earlier medieval foundations underneath.

You can wander in most days without fuss, though it's worth checking ahead as services do occasionally close sections to visitors. No admission charge, which is proper. The town itself is walkable and has decent cafes nearby if you fancy stretching out a visit.

If you're camping at either Stuarts Wood or The Courts - both excellent sites within five miles - this makes an easy morning or late afternoon detour. Chelmsford itself is fairly modern and straightforward, lacking the chocolate-box appeal of some Essex towns, but the cathedral is genuinely worth seeing. Pair it with a walk around the town centre and you've got a solid few hours.
