Chimney Down Common

Open moorland near Taunton doesn't sound like much until you're actually standing on Chimney Down Common, watching the land roll away in all directions. It's a proper Somerset commons experience - the kind of place where you realise how much countryside gets quietly ignored by visitors rushing to the headline attractions.

The reserve itself is largely grassland with scattered trees and the sort of views that reward a decent walk more than they impress from the car park. You'll find gorse and heather depending on the season, and it's the sort of spot where local walkers clearly know what they're doing. Bird watchers will get something out of it; families after dramatic viewpoints probably won't stick around long.

This is very much a walk-it-yourself sort of place rather than an interpreted trail with signs and facilities. Allow an hour or two depending on your mood and fitness. There's no admission charge and no real gatekeeping - just find somewhere to park nearby and head out. It's genuinely worth the detour if you're staying at Waterrow Touring Park, which sits just 3.6 miles away and gives you a proper base for exploring this part of Somerset.

Go when the weather's decent because there's no shelter out there. Bring decent boots if it's been wet. It works best as part of a wider walking day rather than a destination in itself, but that's exactly what makes it feel authentic.
