Chimney (Dis)

A lone brick chimney standing roughly fifty feet tall on the Dartmoor landscape near Tavistock - that's what you're looking at here. It's the last remnant of a tin mine that operated on these moors back in the 18th and 19th centuries, when Cornwall's mining industry was genuinely world-class. The chimney itself is sturdy, weathered red brick that's somehow managed to survive two centuries of moorland weather.

Walking out to it requires a proper moorland hike through fairly open terrain. It's not particularly arduous, but you'll want decent boots and should check the weather - these moors can turn claggy quickly. The appeal is more about context than spectacle, really. If you're interested in industrial history or just fancy a walk with a destination, it works. Less impressive if you've come expecting some grand ruin.

Historians and walkers will get the most from a visit. Kids might find the walk a slog unless they're the type who enjoy exploring moorland. Allow a couple of hours including the walk from the nearest car park.

Best combined with time at Sunnyside Eco Glamping or Woodovis Holiday Park - both are within a few miles and well-positioned for exploring this part of Dartmoor. The chimney fits into the broader picture of what these moors looked like when industry mattered here, and that story's worth understanding if you're spending time in the area.
