Chillington Playing Fields

A stretch of open grassland near Kingsbridge that pulls in birders and walkers looking for something low-key away from the coastal crush. Chillington Playing Fields isn't dramatic - no cliff-edge vistas or rare species guaranteed - but it's the kind of place you stumble into and find yourself staying longer than planned.

The fields themselves are genuinely good for spotting birds if you know what you're looking for. Lapwing, curlew, and various warblers move through depending on the season, and it's peaceful enough that you'll actually hear them rather than just see them vanish. On a clear day the views across South Devon are proper decent too. If you're the type who likes binoculars and a notebook, this delivers.

For families with young kids it's honest work - open space to run about, no massive payoff in terms of attractions, but genuinely calming if your lot needs to burn off energy without you having to marshal them round a visitor centre. Walkers will appreciate the straightforward network of paths that connect through to the broader area around Kingsbridge. You're looking at an hour or so if you're serious about it, less if you're just passing through.

Camp at Start Bay just down the road and this works as an easy morning walk before heading to the beaches, or use Wilton Farm if you want something slightly further out but still close enough for a proper explore. Nothing flashy, nothing expensive - sometimes that's exactly what a holiday needs.
