Chilcomb Down

Chilcomb Down sits just outside Winchester, offering proper views across the Hampshire countryside if you're willing to do a bit of legwork to get there. It's a straightforward walk up to the summit - nothing technical, just a steady climb through open downland with the sort of 360-degree vistas that make you understand why people bothered living out here in the first place.

The down itself is chalk grassland, so it's a working landscape rather than a manicured viewpoint. On a clear day you can see well beyond Winchester's cathedral spire. The walk takes about an hour from the nearest parking, depending on your pace and how often you stop to catch your breath or peer at the view. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might grumble on the way up.

There's no cafe or visitor infrastructure - bring water and sensible shoes. Go early on a weekend if you want peace, or late afternoon when the light gets interesting. It's free, obviously.

If you're camped nearby at Winchester Morn Hill or Holden Farm, this makes a decent morning's work before lunch. It fits well with a broader Winchester explore - the cathedral, the water meadows, the high street - rather than being a standalone destination. Worth doing once, particularly if rain threatens elsewhere. The sort of place that reminds you why the English countryside works best on foot.
