Chidmere Pond

The water at Chidmere is proper still on most days, reflecting the Sussex sky like dark glass. It's a modest pond rather than a dramatic lake - the sort of place where you'll actually see wildlife instead of fighting through crowds to catch a glimpse of it. Dragonflies skim the surface in summer, and herons work the shallows with genuine patience.

Walkers get the most from this spot. The pond sits in countryside between Chichester and Petworth, with reasonable paths around its perimeter if you fancy a gentle loop. It's not a destination on its own - more the kind of place you'd stumble across mid-walk and think, 'Right, I'll stop here for twenty minutes.' Birdwatchers could happily spend longer with binoculars, particularly in winter.

There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of, which is rather the point. Bring your own refreshments if you're planning to linger. The walking is easiest in dry weather; after rain, muddy patches appear. Allow an hour if you're making it a proper stop, less if you're just passing through.

If you're camped at Stubcroft Farm or Creative Camping - both within five miles - this is a pleasant morning walk rather than a day trip destination. Chichester Lakeside Holiday Park is closer still, though that's a different sort of base. Chidmere works best as part of a walking day rather than a standalone visit, but for those who appreciate quiet water and the chance of spotting something interesting, it's well worth the detour.
