Chestnut Wood

Walk far enough into Chestnut Wood and you'll forget Warminster exists. This is proper woodland - the kind where sunlight filters through in columns and the air smells of damp earth and leaf litter. The trees are old enough to make you feel young, and in autumn the ground becomes a carpet of conkers and russet leaves that crunch satisfyingly underfoot.

It's a straightforward woodland walk rather than an attraction with facilities or exhibitions. You'll find footpaths threading through, but don't expect signage or marked routes - bring a map or decent phone signal. The wood is free to explore and works best as a half-hour or hour-long ramble, depending on how much you want to wander. There's a real sense of getting away rather than doing something organized, which some people love and others find underwhelming.

Families with older kids will get the most from it - little ones might tire of "just trees" after twenty minutes. It's the sort of place walkers and forest lovers genuinely enjoy, where you can think or chat without competing with crowds. Spring brings bluebells, though you'll need to time it right.
