Chessington Zoo

The zoo sits right on the edge of Chessington, Surrey, and it's a proper full day out if you've got kids in tow. You're walking through enclosures with everything from big cats to primates, reptiles to birds - the usual zoo fare done competently enough. The layout means you're not backtracking constantly, which matters when you've got little ones in tow.

It works best for families with children under twelve. Teenagers will get restless unless they're genuinely into zoology. The animal encounters are the real draw - you can get closer to things than you'd expect at a big city zoo, and the keeper talks add actual substance rather than just being entertainment filler.

Timing matters. Weekday mornings are manageable; weekends turn heaving. Budget four to five hours minimum if you want a proper look around without rushing. Allow extra time if your kids are the type to stop and stare at every creature for ten minutes.

If you're staying at Chessington World of Adventures Resort just down the road, this pairs nicely as a second-day activity - the resort is literally 0.1 miles away, so there's no faffing about with car journeys. Polyapes Scout Campsite and Walton on Thames Camping Club are both within a few miles if you're after something less commercial. The zoo itself isn't groundbreaking - you won't find rare breeding programmes or cutting-edge conservation work on display - but it does what it sets out to do without pretension. Worth the half-day if you're in the area with young children.
