Chesil Beach Portland

Walk along Chesil Beach and you're treading on one of England's most unusual coastlines - a vast shingle bank that's been sorting itself by size for millennia. The pebbles genuinely get smaller as you head west towards Portland, a quirk that's fascinated geologists for centuries. It's a proper working beach, not some manicured seaside resort, and that's precisely what makes it compelling.

The beach stretches for 18 kilometres between Weymouth and Portland Harbour, and it's free to access and wander for as long as you fancy. Most people spend an hour or two walking sections of it, collecting the smooth stones, watching the water change colour, or just enjoying the raw energy of the place when the weather turns. The views back towards Weymouth town and across the bay are genuinely worth the walk, especially on clearer days.

It's the kind of spot that suits walkers more than families with small children - the shingle gets tiring underfoot, and there's nowhere to sit down easily. History enthusiasts will get a kick from knowing this is where the Spanish Armada was first spotted in 1588, though you won't find much visible reminder of that now. Photographers love it for the texture and light, particularly at dawn or dusk.

Stay at Chesil Beach Lodge Park just inland and you're perfectly placed for morning walks along the beach before heading into Weymouth for lunch. It's worth doing properly rather than as a drive-by, particularly if the wind's picking up - that's when the beach really shows its character.
