Chesham Moor

The moor spreads out just outside Amersham as a proper working nature reserve - the sort of place where you actually see what conservation looks like rather than just read about it. Chesham Moor is a lowland heath and grassland site, and it matters because these habitats have nearly vanished from the southeast. You'll find it quiet most days, which means a decent chance of spotting birds and insects without the crowds.

What you get is a network of paths through open scrubland and heath, fairly flat walking with good sightlines. It's ideal for half a day, though an hour is enough if you're just passing through on the way between Amersham and somewhere else. The real appeal is for anyone interested in how land is managed for wildlife - you'll see the work in action. Families won't find much to keep young children occupied for long, but school-age kids interested in nature will find it worthwhile.

The reserve is free to access, and there's no formal visitor centre, so turn up whenever daylight allows. Spring and early summer are best for wildflowers and bird activity. If you're based at one of the nearby holiday parks - Lights Camera Glamping or Whelpley Hill are both close by - it's the sort of easy morning walk that breaks up a glamping trip without demanding much planning. Combine it with a proper explore of Amersham town afterwards and you've got a solid half-day sorted.
