Cherwell Valley Benefice

The Cherwell Valley Benefice is actually three churches - Islip, Kidlington, and Marston - spread across a quiet corner of Oxfordshire north of Oxford. We're talking proper rural England here, the kind of place where you can spend an afternoon church-hopping without seeing another soul.

Islip's the real draw. It's got a genuinely impressive tower that dominates the little village, and inside there's some seriously good medieval stonework if you know what to look for. The whole setup feels unrushed, which is rare. Kidlington's church is more modest but worth a look if you're passing through town, and Marston completes the trio without any fanfare whatsoever.

These aren't attractions that'll keep you entertained for hours - you're looking at thirty minutes to an hour per church, maybe two if you're genuinely interested in parish histories. But that's rather the point. They work brilliantly as a quiet punctuation mark to a caravan park weekend, or a gentle walk between villages if the weather's decent.

Admission is free, naturally. Getting there is straightforward from either Glebe Leisure or The Pig Place - both within easy reach. The real value here is the slowness of it all. No queues, no gift shop, just some proper old buildings that have been doing their job quietly for centuries. Church enthusiasts and walkers will get the most from this. Families with restless kids might struggle to justify the detour.
