Cheddar Gorge & Caves Tickets & Information

The limestone cliffs rise up suddenly as you round the bend into Cheddar village, and you realise why people have been coming here for centuries. Cheddar Gorge is proper dramatic - a mile-long canyon carved through the Mendips with 450-foot vertical rocks on either side. You can walk the valley floor or take the cliff-top path, both of which show you why this place matters geologically and why the caves below are the real draw.

Inside, the show caves are worth your time. Gough's Cave is the main attraction - an enormous cavern system where you can walk through chambers that feel genuinely ancient. You'll see stalactites, stalagmites, and the kind of underground lakes that make you remember how small you are. Cox's Cave, the other principal one, is slightly smaller but equally impressive. Both require paid entry and take around an hour each to explore properly.

Families with kids aged 6 and up will find this absorbing without being exhausting. The caves maintain a constant cool temperature year-round, so go in summer if the gorge itself is scorching. Budget a full morning or afternoon minimum - rushing defeats the point. Walkers should tackle both the gorge floor and the cliff-top trails for proper variety.
