Chater Valley

The Chater Valley runs through some genuinely lovely countryside south of Leicester, and it's the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. The river itself winds through wooded sections and open farmland, creating a landscape that feels properly rural despite being within striking distance of the city.

Walkers get the most from this one. The valley offers decent rambling along the Chater, with paths that range from gentle riverside strolls to longer treks across the surrounding hills. You can walk it for free, obviously, and there's no formal visitor centre to speak of. Allow half a day for a decent walk, longer if you're taking your time. The nearest settlements - Market Harborough area - have parking options, though reconnaissance is wise.
