Charred Cross

Charred Cross occupies a converted building near Coventry and functions as both exhibition venue and working studio - you'll often find artists actually in residence, which changes how you experience the place. The exhibitions rotate, but the gallery favours contemporary work with a particular bent towards installation and sculpture. None of that distant-rope-off-the-art nonsense either; you get close to things.

This works best if you're already comfortable with modern art or genuinely curious to have your preconceptions rearranged. It's not a knackering day out - you'll spend an hour here tops, maybe ninety minutes if you chat to whoever's around. During a recent visit, half the appeal was watching someone fabricating work in the adjacent studio. It's the sort of place that reminds you why small independent galleries matter - no corporate polish, genuine engagement with what's being made and shown.

If you're based at Hollyfast Caravan Park or Avon Wild Camping nearby, this makes a proper rainy-afternoon option or a quick cultural breather between walks. Close enough to Coventry to lump it together with other city visits, but far enough out to feel like actual discovery rather than tourist box-ticking.
