Charmy Down

The walk up Charmy Down from Bath is straightforward enough, and on a clear day you get proper views across the Somerset countryside that make the climb worthwhile. It's not dramatic - don't expect Pennine vistas - but there's something satisfying about standing on high ground and seeing the landscape roll out in all directions.

The peak itself is fairly modest, and the appeal here is really the walk rather than the destination. It works well if you're based at Bath Mill Lodge Retreat or CAMPWELL FARM and fancy stretching your legs without committing to a full day's hiking. Walkers will appreciate it, families with reasonably fit kids won't find it a slog, and history types might enjoy knowing they're treading the same ground locals have used for centuries.

Allow a couple of hours return if you're not rushing, longer if you're stopping to take photos or enjoy the views. It's free to access, obviously - it's a peak in the countryside. Summer or early autumn is best; winter can be muddy and the views obscured.

From Bath itself it's easily accessible, and makes a logical afternoon outing if you're staying at one of the nearby parks. The surrounding area has enough woodland and footpaths that you could link Charmy Down into a bigger route if you wanted. On its own though, it's a decent standalone walk rather than a destination that'll keep you occupied for hours.
