Charlton's Coppice

The woodland around Charlton's Coppice offers proper walking territory if you're staying anywhere near Ludlow. It's the kind of place where you can actually lose an afternoon without trying - a genuine escape rather than a tourist tick-box. The forest gives you good cover year-round, which matters when you're dealing with Herefordshire weather.

This works best for walkers who want to roam without following a strict route. Families with older children will find enough space to explore, though it's not a destination in itself - more a piece of countryside you'd add to a longer loop if you're based at one of the nearby parks. Churchbridge Glamping and Orchard Holiday Park are close enough that you could make it part of a day's walking from either site.

Timing-wise, autumn's genuinely lovely here, though spring when the woodland floor's covered in bluebells has its own appeal. Summer can feel a bit dense and buggy. Allow at least two hours if you're going to do it properly and actually walk the coppice rather than just skirting the edges.

Bring a decent map or know your route before you head in - there's nothing to buy, no facilities, and mobile signal can be patchy. It's free, obviously. The real draw is that it's local woodland without the visitor centre crowds you'd get elsewhere in the region. Honest stuff, no more, no less.
