Charlton Plantation

A proper forest walk rather than a manicured attraction, Charlton Plantation sits just outside Salisbury and delivers exactly what you'd want from a Wiltshire woodland - decent paths, plenty of shade, and the kind of peace that makes you remember why you left the house. The plantation is mixed woodland, dense enough to feel like you've actually gone somewhere, with paths that wind through and offer a genuine escape from the A-roads nearby.

It's ideal for families with kids old enough to manage uneven ground and the occasional muddy stretch. Walkers will appreciate the network of trails, though don't expect dramatic vistas or dramatic elevation - this is about the woodland itself, not reaching a summit. History buffs might find it less rewarding unless you're interested in forestry management and how Wiltshire's land has been shaped over centuries.

Allow at least an hour minimum, two if you want to properly explore. Go early morning or late afternoon to dodge the crowds and catch better light filtering through the trees. The plantation is completely free, which is the main thing you need to know.

It's not spectacular enough to plan a trip around, but as part of a longer Wiltshire break - mixing walks, Stonehenge, and proper campsite time - it slots in nicely.
