Chapel (site of)

All that's left of this medieval chapel are foundations and scattered stones, but standing here on the Highland moorland near Inverness, you can almost sense the devotion that once drew people to this remote spot. It's one of those archaeological sites that rewards patience - the kind of place where you need to use your imagination a bit, because the walls won't do it for you.

What you're looking at are the remains of a building that's been slowly reclaimed by the landscape over centuries. There's no interpretation board, no visitor centre, just the bones of it. History types and keen walkers will get proper value from this - it's the sort of discovery that makes you think about how communities survived in these isolated areas, how faith must have mattered intensely to bring people trudging out here.

The real pleasure is the journey itself. Getting to the site takes you through genuine Highland terrain, and if you're based at somewhere like Ardtower Caravan Park just a couple of miles away, it's an easy half-day excursion. Allow an hour or so to explore and soak in the atmosphere - longer if you're the type who enjoys sketching or photographing ruins in different light.

It's free, obviously - there's nothing to charge for. Best visited on a clear day when you can appreciate the views across the moorland. Families with very young children might find it a bit underwhelming, but teenagers with any curiosity about archaeology will find it genuinely interesting. Bring a camera and sturdy boots.
