Chapel of the Ascension, Butlins, Minehead

The Chapel of the Ascension sits right in the heart of Butlins Minehead, a proper surprise if you're expecting nothing but arcade machines and ice cream vans. Built in the 1950s when the holiday camp was expanding, it's a genuine working church rather than some theme park afterthought. The interior is modest but genuinely moving - clean lines, good light, and the kind of peaceful quiet you won't find anywhere else on the site.

It's really for the spiritually inclined or anyone curious about post-war British architecture. Families staying at the resort might pop in for a Sunday service if they're that way inclined, but it's not a draw in itself. You'll spend maybe twenty minutes here, tops - it doesn't demand more than that.

The chapel works brilliantly as a breather if you're staying at Butlins itself. The main holiday park is only a five-minute walk away, and if you're based at the nearby Minehead Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, it's barely a mile. After a day of queuing for rides and eating candyfloss, the silence in here is almost jarring. Worth a visit if you're already on site and need ten minutes to yourself, but don't make it a reason to visit Minehead on its own. The seaside town has proper attractions worth your time instead.
