Chantersleur Plantation

A proper woodland walk through old Sussex forest - Chantersleur Plantation sits just outside Dorking and feels like stepping back into England's working countryside. It's a plantation in the traditional sense, so you get neat rows of conifers mixed with older broadleaf trees, the kind of place where the light filters through in stripes and everything smells green and damp.

The main draw is straightforward: decent walking tracks that don't demand fell-running fitness, plenty of shade for warm days, and that meditative quiet you only get in proper trees. It's the sort of place where you can spend two hours ambling about without really having a destination, which is either brilliant or boring depending on your mood. Walkers will appreciate it more than most - the trails are clear enough, though a bit muddy in winter. History types won't find much beyond the trees themselves. Families with restless kids under eight might find it underwhelming after an hour.

There's no visitor infrastructure that I'm aware of, so bring what you need. It's free to access and you can turn up whenever suits you. The nearest proper base is Gatwick Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, about twenty minutes away - not exactly glamorous but functional if you're touring the area. Worth combining with a proper walk in the North Downs if you're staying nearby. On its own? Fine for a morning stretch of the legs. Not a destination in itself.
