Channers

Channers is a proper woodland walk just outside Maidenhead, the kind of place locals know and visitors often miss. It's ancient forest - proper old-growth stuff - with decent paths winding through beech and oak that make you feel properly removed from the suburban sprawl nearby. The whole area is free to access and takes about an hour to walk through at a leisurely pace, though you can easily spend longer picking your way along the various trails.

It works best for people who actually like walking rather than ticking off Instagram spots. Families with young kids will get bored after half an hour if the weather's anything but brilliant, but older children and adults who enjoy woodland rambling will find it genuinely restorative. The paths can get muddy after rain - proper squelchy in places - so wellington boots aren't a bad shout.

What makes it worthwhile is how quiet it stays. You won't fight crowds here, and there's something about being among genuinely old trees that feels different from your standard country park. The understory's quite thick in places, so it's genuinely foresty rather than manicured.

If you're based at Hurley Riverside Park or any of the other caravan sites within a couple of miles, Channers is worth a morning detour rather than a full-day commitment. It slots nicely into a broader Thames Valley trip - you could combine it with the river walks around Hurley proper, which are just down the road. Don't expect facilities; bring what you need.
