Chambered Grave

A low stone mound near Larne holds one of Northern Ireland's most significant Neolithic burials. The chambered grave - properly excavated and studied - reveals how people lived and died thousands of years ago, with human remains and pottery shards telling stories that archaeologists are still piecing together.

You won't find much in the way of interpretation or facilities here. What you get is a modest cairn, the actual burial chamber visible if you know where to look, and the satisfaction of standing at a genuinely old place without the crowds or the gift shop. It's the kind of site that rewards a bit of research beforehand - bring a guidebook or read up on Neolithic passage graves, and suddenly you're not just looking at stones, you're understanding a 5,000-year-old ritual.

This appeals most to archaeology enthusiasts and serious walkers who don't mind a bit of detective work. Families with young children might find it underwhelming - there's no playground energy here, no hands-on exhibits. But if you're the type who gets excited by Bronze Age pottery or wants to add another Neolithic site to your list, it's absolutely worth the detour from Larne.

The nearby Down to Earth Wild Camping offers a proper base for exploring the wider Mid and East Antrim archaeological landscape. Allow perhaps 20 minutes on-site, longer if you're genuinely interested in the history. Free to visit, no fixed hours - it's just sitting there in the landscape, accessible year-round. Go when the weather's decent; there's little shelter.
