Chalton Down

The walk up Chalton Down rewards you with one of those rare moments where Hampshire's South Downs actually feel properly dramatic. It's not a mountain - let's be honest - but standing at the top, you get genuine views across the Solent and over to the Isle of Wight that make the climb worth your while.

This is chalk downland, so the turf is springy underfoot and the slopes are steep enough to make your legs know they've done something. Allow a solid hour up from Emsworth and bring proper walking boots; it's not a casual stroll. The peak itself is broad and open, with ancient earthworks visible if you know where to look - Bronze Age stuff, mostly, though there's Romano-British interest too for the archaeology types.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a family destination where kids stop every five minutes to look at something - they'll either love a proper hike or complain bitterly. History enthusiasts might find the defensive structures interesting enough to justify lingering, but you won't find information boards or visitor facilities up there.

You could combine it with the quieter bits of the Downs without needing to flog yourself on a longer route. Go mid-week in autumn when the light's golden and the crowds thin out.
