Challacombe Down

The walk up Challacombe Down takes about forty minutes from the car park, and you're rewarded with proper panoramic views across Dartmoor once you reach the summit. It's not the highest point on the moor - that honour goes elsewhere - but the exposed ridge walk has a satisfying edge to it, especially on days when the wind picks up and clouds roll across the moorland in waves.

The Down itself is moorland heath, all gorse and heather depending on the season, with weathered outcrops of granite breaking through. On a clear day you can see for miles. On a grey one, which is frankly more common, you get that moody Dartmoor atmosphere that photographers actually prefer. There's a Bronze Age cairn up there too, which adds a bit of historical weight to the ramble.

This is walker territory, not a leisurely stroll - bring proper boots and weather gear, as the exposure means you catch the wind properly. Kids over ten will manage it fine if they're used to hills. Anyone expecting a café or visitor facilities will be disappointed; there's nothing on site, so pack water and a snack.

It's a natural pairing with Dartmoor National Park itself, which sits just four miles away. You could easily spend a long weekend in the area exploring different valleys and peaks without repeating yourself. Allow two to three hours for the round trip if you want to sit at the top for ten minutes and actually look at the view rather than just photograph it.
