Chalk Dell Copse

A small woodland patch just outside Winchester that punches above its weight for a quick forest walk. Chalk Dell Copse is proper woodland - the kind with actual trees rather than a manicured park, chalky soil underfoot, and paths that feel like you've stepped away from the city entirely. Nothing fancy, but that's rather the point.

You're looking at maybe 20-30 minutes to walk through depending on which way you fancy going. The chalk geology means it's well-drained even after rain, and the woodland floor gets dappled light filtering through beech and hazel. It's the sort of place where dog walkers and local families come to stretch their legs without faffing about with car parks and entrance fees.

Best suited to anyone wanting a proper woodland feel without tramping for hours. Young kids might get restless unless they're the type to poke around looking for insects and fallen branches, which fair enough, they'll love it. Walkers will find it a decent warm-up, though it's too small for a proper hike on its own.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that we can find, so come prepared with water and let someone know where you're headed. Spring and early summer are lovely when the light's good. If you're based at Holden Farm Camping or Beechen Glamping near Winchester, this is an easy local outing to break up the day without commitment. Free access, naturally - it's just woodland doing what woodland does.
