Cefn Yr Esgair

The walk up Cefn Yr Esgair rewards you with proper panoramic views across Cardigan Bay and inland toward the Cambrian Mountains. It's not a particularly high peak - nothing that'll leave you gasping - but the ridge walk itself is the real draw, with open moorland underfoot and hardly anyone about even on decent weekends.

You're looking at a solid two to three hours if you're going at a reasonable pace from Aberystwyth way. The terrain is boggy in patches, so decent boots matter. On a clear day the visibility is excellent; murky weather turns it into a bit of a trudge through cloud. This is walker territory pure and simple - no facilities, no visitor centre, no shortcuts.

It suits anyone who likes solitude in wild country without needing a proper alpine challenge. Families with older kids can manage it if they're used to rough ground. You won't find crowds or Instagram moments, just you and the landscape.

The proximity to Aberystwyth makes it convenient for a park-based break - Forester's Retreat Glamping just four miles away offers decent comfort after a day on the hills, while tyn ffordd fach and Aber Camping are similarly close if you want something simpler. This isn't a destination you'd travel hours to reach, but it's genuinely worth including if you're already staying in the area for the Ceredigion coast.
