Cefn Y Coed

The walk up Cefn Y Coed rewards you with views across the Tanat Valley that stretch for miles on a clear day. It's a proper hill rather than a mountain, but don't let that fool you - it's steep enough to feel like proper work when you're halfway up, and the final push to the summit leaves you genuinely pleased with yourself.

You'll find yourself surrounded by moorland and rough grassland, with sheep dotted about doing their thing. The top itself is windswept and open, which means the views aren't blocked by trees, but it also means you get battered by weather when it rolls in. On a decent afternoon though, you can see right across to the Brecon Beacons on a clear day.

It's the sort of place that appeals to proper walkers rather than casual strollers. You'll want decent boots and maybe two hours to account for the climb and a bit of time to catch your breath at the top. Families with older kids who are used to hills will manage it fine, but it's not a gentle ramble.

The nearest proper base is Llanymynech, which sits just below, and if you're staying at Tanat Holiday Park or the glamping spots at Sweeney Farm, this is practically on your doorstep. It makes a solid morning's walk before heading down for lunch, or a good late-afternoon climb if you want to catch the light changing across the valley. Well worth doing if you're in the area, though it's not worth a special trip on its own.
